SPCA over the moon

MIDRAND - On 18 February, the storm which swept through Midrand left more than dishevelled trees in its wake as it ripped off the shade netting of the cattery at the Midrand SPCA.

Fortunately for the non-profit organisation, their longstanding supporter, Brett Palframan, saw their social media post about the damages and immediately reacted.

“With the help of Saul Jassinowsky, who sponsored all the netting, and [volunteers] Laura Marais, Cliff Pinto and Darren Fresco who came on a Saturday to erect the shade netting over the cattery,” said Brenda Lucas, chairperson of the Midrand SPCA.

Lucas said they had originally tried to put the shade netting back together, but it had been damaged too badly, so they called upon the public to donate towards the cost.

“The public has been amazing in their response. Many other members of the public also came to our aid with monetary donations and we give thanks to Nathan Truter, Werner Jordaan from Dial-A-House Sitter, Kim Brookes, Nicky Pearce, Elsabe Herselman from West Rand Audi Centre, Jan Engelbrecht Klitzke, Bianca Jacobs, Serena Pienaar and Atoz Midrand for their kindness and generosity,” Lucas said.

“Luckily the cattery is built in such a way that the cats and kittens were still sheltered from the storm, despite the damage done.

“We are completely overwhelmed by the support and response received and the remaining funds that were donated will be utilised to cover the dog runs – and the dogs are sure to love it.”
