Resident gives back

MIDRAND - Following a story in the Midrand Reporter, published on 29 January, Life 4 U received a generous donation of groceries from a local Midrand resident.

“Since the publication of that article, Mogen Moodley did the extraordinary for the organisation and bought lots of groceries for our volunteers,” said Simon Molekwa, project manager of the community relief organisation.

Many of the organisation’s volunteers are from disadvantaged backgrounds and are unemployed. Moodley said their work was even more commendable as this meant that they saw a need beyond their own.

“I brought them basic essentials after having seen three articles in the Midrand Reporter that called for the assistance of the community,” said Moodley. He said he chose to help the Ivory Park-based organisation as he thought he could make the most difference there.

Molekwa expressed his gratitude to Moodley, “Our organisation was so overwhelmed by the huge grocery donation received from him, who is just a community member with a heart for youth and community development.”

Molekwa also said the organisation has not been resting on its laurels but has also been fundraising for cleaning agents. “The youth of Ivory Park haven’t lost hope. That’s why they promote toilet hygiene and a clean environment. They’ve also started volunteering at other care centres to promote this cause.”

Although Molekwa said the organisation is positive about its future, he said they still need donors who will ensure the longevity of the project. “With the high number of unemployed youth increasing in our community, our organisation aims to launch a life skills centre to empower the youth with skills and help them to find employment,” he said.

“Most of the youth we are working with have been volunteering with us for more than two years and sometimes it’s sad to watch them struggle to find employment. That’s why we plan to launch a life skills centre to empower them.”

This new wing of the organisation would require computers and desks. “To this end, we would appreciate donations of redundant computers, desks and chairs.”
