Midrand pupils excel in IT programme

MIDRAND - A total of 91 pupils from Gauteng and Cape Town recently graduated from ADT Teach, a computer literacy training programme which provides pupils with IT training and support skills.

The three-year programme is a joint initiative by ADT Security and the South African Education and Environment Project (SAEP), which hopes to strengthen the graduates’ prospects in the challenging IT job market.

A total of 39 pupils attend Midrand schools including Allanridge School, Tsosoloso Ya Afrika Secondary School and Umqhele Secondary School.

In a statement, general manager of ADT Inland Region, Theunis Kotze said, “The programme is aimed at providing pupils, some of whom have never even touched a computer, with IT training and support skills. All graduates receive a nationally recognised IT certificate in end-user computing. All ADT Teach programme educators are qualified as national qualifications assessors.

“We have learned a lot over the seven years since our first ADT Teach intake, and along with SAEP, we are constantly looking at ways to make the programme more efficient. We also keep track of our graduates once they leave the programme to see how we can offer further support.”

ADT Teach manager of SAEP, Sean Wilson said, “ADT plays a vital role in the development of these young South Africans and its investment will reap rewards for many years to come.”

Two graduation ceremonies were held in December in both of the provinces where the top students in Cape Town and Johannesburg were honoured. The best performing students each received a laptop and a top achiever certificate.

Snamile Bianca Mabaso, a Grade 12 ADT Teach pupil, thanked ADT Security and SAEP for the opportunity provided to her and her fellow graduates.

Top achievers in Johannesburg included:

  •  Yavin McPherson – Allanridge Secondary School
  •  Mpho Namande – Allanridge Secondary School
  •  Victoria Chepape – Tsosoloso Ya Afrika Secondary School
  •  Omkarabile Kau – Tsosoloso Ya Afrika Secondary School
  •  Innocent Sithole – Umqhele Secondary School.
