Cattle carcasses dumped on Glen Austin farm

GLEN AUSTIN - Cattle carcasses have been found illegally dumped on a property in Glen Austin.

Resident, Janet Schofield, told Midrand Reporter that a week ago another resident noticed smoke coming from a farm owned by the Strydom family in the area. Schofield said, “A number of residents went to put out the fire but while there we came across a horrific sight of piles of cattle heads scattered around over a large area.”

Schofield stressed that people would not use portions of the farm as a dumping ground if the farm had been secured with a fence on all sides.

The owner of the farm, Willie Strydom, said people have been illegally dumping carcasses on his property for a couple of years now. He stated, “I suspect that the people dumping on my property are vendors who take the meat from cattle heads, cook and sell and dump carcasses on my property. The smell coming from the carcasses is horrible and I have tried to remove the carcasses whenever I can.”

Strydom also mentioned that years ago he mentioned the problem to police officers who were patrolling the area but then it stopped. Now the illegal dumping has started again.

The Midrand SPCA is currently investigating the matter to see if there was any animal cruelty related to this incident. The SPCA’s chairperson Brenda Lucas explained, “Based on what have already discovered during our investigations, it would seem that this is a matter of illegal dumping of carcasses after consumption. We also urge the public to please come forward should they know anything with regards to this incident.”

Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the matter can be reported to the Johannesburg Environmental Health Department. The department has been contacted for comment and is yet to come back to Midrand Reporter.
