Police descend on criminals on Lever and Olifantsfontein roads

COUNTRY VIEW - The Gauteng Flying Squad recently arrested one of six suspects who are allegedly robbing pedestrians and motorists on Lever and Olifantsfontein roads in Midrand.

It is claimed that in more than one incident, the group of suspects rob pedestrians and flee the scene in a Madza 323, which has been spotted on the corner of Lever and Olifantsfontein roads numerous times.

Midrand police spokesperson, Constable Matome Tlamela said, “On 6 February, the flying squad team noticed a commotion on the corner and descended on the suspects, but they managed to get away in the Madza.”

She said one of the suspects ran into the bushes and was chased by police and arrested. During the arrest, a victim told police that the suspect had just robbed him of his wallet and bank cards at gunpoint.

Police searched the suspect and found an unlicensed firearm with the serial number filed off, and the victim’s wallet. The wallet was handed back to the victim and the suspect was taken to Midrand Police Station. He is expected to appear in court soon on charges of armed robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Tlamela added that police believe that the suspect and his alleged accomplices have been involved in many other robberies which have taken place on the corner of the two roads, and towards Country View.

Police urge people to take care when walking home and avoid walking near thick bushes, walking alone very early in the morning or late at night and for motorists to avoid stopping at the side of the road for a long time.
