The benefits of dedication

JOHANNESBURG – It was a joyful celebration at the San Salvador Home and Workshop as Joanne Pearton of the San Salvador Home 947 Ride for a Purpose team handed over a cheque of R57 150.

The handover ceremony was presided over by Paul Ditchfield, ambassador of San Salvador Home and Workshop, and was in honour of the funds that Pearton and her fellow team members had collected during last year’s Momentum 947 Cycle Challenge.

Pearton participated in the first 947 Cycle Challenge in 1997 and last year, she decided to put a team together to raise funds for the home. Her four brothers, mother and father were in the team, along with 29 other cyclists.

The ceremony gave the team a chance to thank their main sponsor, Copper Tubing Africa who supplied them with cycling shirts and supported the team on the day.

San Salvador Home was opened in 1936 by the Dominican Sisters of Kings Williams Town and served as a residential home and training centre for a small group of intellectually challenged children.

Residents were trained in crafts, weaving and knitting to help raise money and to keep the women busy, and this concept has been the springboard idea for Sally’s Workshop, as communities approached the home requesting help for intellectually challenged family members.

The introduction of a protected work environment in 1991 created an employment and skills training centre for intellectually challenged women and men living in disadvantaged communities – Sally’s Workshop – which helps enable disabled men and women in society.
