Victim’s quick thinking leads to suspect’s arrest

MIDRAND - A Noordwyk woman's quick thinking has led to the arrest of one of four men who recently robbed her house.

In a statement to Midrand police, the woman said she was in her home late at night and walked from her bedroom to her kitchen when she encountered a man in her passage. She did not hesitate to run back to her bedroom and lock herself inside. The man then allegedly banged on her bedroom door for her to open.

She then screamed for help from her bedroom to alert her neighbours.

From her bedroom window, she saw the intruders’ car, which was a silver VW Polo hatchback. Neighbours who had been awakened by the screaming took down the car’s registration number and contacted Midrand police.

After the suspects had stolen some household items, the men made a quick getaway and left the woman unharmed.

“The suspects took a Sansui TV and a laptop which are estimated to be worth R6 000,” said Constable Matome Tlamela, head of communications for Midrand Police Station.

Tlamela said they used the registration number to trace the owner of the vehicle. It was found that the vehicle belonged to a 29-year-old man who lived in Mamelodi, Pretoria. Police tracked down the man and arrested him. He will appear in the Midrand Magistrates’ Court soon on charges of housebreaking and theft.

The other three suspects are still on the run.
