Lack of funds threatens young NGO

MIDRAND - The Life 4 U Foundation, a youth-based non-profit organisation, is under threat of closure due to a lack of funding.

The organisation, which has various wings, but with the primary function of addressing hygiene issues in townships, has been hard hit this January with no donors.

“The funds we are currently raising to assist and develop our local schools to combat bad sanitation are not sufficient to sustain a project of this magnitude,” said the organisation’s project manager, Simon Molekwa.

Molekwa cited the growth of the project as one of the reasons behind their current plight. “We have grown tremendously in the past year and have received local and national recognition,” he said, adding that he was nominated in ANN7’s South African of the Year 2015 awards show.

Molekwa said he saw this as a validation of their mandate to educate pupils and community members about good toilet hygiene and a clean environment.

They assist schools in toilet cleaning, maintenance and refurbishment. These are tasks that require masks, gloves, cleaning agents, paint and painting equipment.

“The project empowers the youth and takes them off the streets as it is also a youth volunteering community development programme with the purpose of equipping young people to become leaders and agents of change who can develop their communities,” said Molekwa.

“Through this project, the youth of South Africa are showing that they have the capability to develop and grow their communities and the country.” He said the project presented the perfect outlet for young people to express their passion for community leadership.

“They sometimes walk long distances and volunteer on empty stomachs, that’s why we are appealing for support and are asking local businesses to adopt this project.”
