Metro Police strike suspended to allow for peaceful negotiations
JOBURG – It was business as usual for Metro Police officers on 4 January pending the outcome of talks between the South African Municipal Workers' Union and City of Joburg.
It was reported that Samwu’s spokesperson, Conel Mackay said key issues behind the negotiations were salary advances and unpaid allowances.
A Metro Police strike was initially meant to start on 24 December, however, the union was interdicted on 22 December last year. Metro police spokesperson, Wayne Minnar said Metro police officers did report for duty on 24 December.
Negotiations between the City of Joburg and Samwu started yesterday and the decision was made that no striking would take place while talks were taking place with the City.
Licensing departments and testing stations have not been affected by Samwu’s negotiations with the City and officers have been instructed, by the union, to go about their work as usual pending the outcome of the negotiations.
