New in town

BRAAMFONTEIN - It’s just what Braamfontein was in need of – a sushi bar.

Braamfontein has been the place to be since the rejuvenation of the precinct and the opening of exciting venues such as Neighbourgoods Market, Kitchener’s, The Smokehouse Grill and the Play Braamfontein venues.

Food is a central theme to the building of the area, with a number of coffee cafés, grill houses, hotel restaurants, pizza places and food markets in the area, but there has never been a sushi bar in the midst of the foodie madness.

You can now do away with the disappointment of the missing cuisine in the area and say hello to Pichi Pichi Sushi Bar.

The sushi bar is situated in the social hub complex that is 70 Juta and has fish painted on its walls in lively colours. The interior is decorated in an eclectic style, using modern chairs and sofa couches to compliment the traditional Chinese-style origami light covers.

The restaurant has been open for a little more than two months and has received some rave reviews from visitors.

The unassuming spot creates versions of sushi that can’t be described as traditional. Pichi Pichi puts its own spin on traditional creations thus producing dishes that are a signature to the eatery. Their signature dish is the Pichi Prawn, which is topped with a tempura prawn and is a dish that is definitely worth a return visit to the spot.

What is even more exciting are the fantastic specials on selected days – 50 percent off for students in the university-focused community of Braamfontein is nothing to scoff at.

Unlike YuMe sushi bar’s Chocolate California Roll or Simply Asia’s Banana Tempura you won’t find any sweet creations at Pichi Pichi – it’s a restaurant not for those with a sweet tooth – but if the sushi is good enough there won’t be space for anything else.

The reasonably priced sushi joint is something worth trying in a neighbourhood that is always pushing the limits.
