Statistics reveal women hit hardest by crime

JOBURG – According to Statistics SA’s Victims of Crime Survey, many South Africans, particularly women, feel unsafe in their neighbourhoods and believe that crime is increasing.

This sentiment was mirrored in an informal survey conducted by 1st for Women Insurance, where 97 percent of the all-female respondents admitted to constantly worrying about the safety of their family.

Robyn Farrell, executive head of 1st for Women Insurance, said in addition to worrying that something may happen to their family, 33 percent of respondents constantly worried about the safety of their homes, 28 percent worried about their possessions and 35 percent worried about something happening to their car.

“Fifty-seven percent of our respondents have been a victim of crime, and respond to this constant feeling of being unsafe by always being aware of their surroundings (89 percent), not wearing any jewellery (33 percent) and not driving alone at night (26 percent),” Farrell said.

She added that 46 percent of the respondents admitted that they would be able to achieve a lot more if they felt safe at home.

“When it comes to what crime our respondents fear the most, 45 percent said hijacking, closely followed by house robbery. A number of respondents also mentioned that they feared child kidnapping and rape,” said Farrell.
