Eat Play Love owner talks about starting a business

PRESIDENT PARK - A designer from President Park launched her Eat Play Love clothing and accessories line at a vintage tea party where guests enjoyed a great lunch and a high tea at a second session in the evening.

Owner of the clothing line, Karen Harris, said she is excited about the launch. “As a designer, this is something I have looked forward to for a long time. I am excited about each of our accessories and clothes.”

Harris stated that the biggest challenge starting her small business was having to take on several roles as she could not employ full-time staff until she had enough money to pay them. “I am doing everything from designing, pattern making, sewing and sourcing fabrics. I am currently training someone who has proven to be very resourceful in many areas, including the manufacture of jewellery and sewing.”

She pointed out that there is no particular time or way to start a business, you just need to have the passion for what you do and get money to start the business.

Harris did not have any sponsors and used her own money as start-up capital. She mentioned that she is also an agent for Holster sandals which are designed in Australia. Other brands under the agency are Prada, Ray Ban and Paris Hilton which can be viewed and purchased at a showroom in Kempton Park.

Speaking about the importance of supporting charities, Harris said, “I am currently a collection point contact for Gift of the Givers, it is fulfilling to be a part of something that can change people’s lives.”
