Noordwyk Secondary School helps out

MIDRAND - Yenzani Children's Home was surprised when more than 200 food items were donated by Noordwyk Secondary School on 27 November.

Vanessa Hale, the home’s centre manager, said they were grateful for the food as it would be useful during the festive season. “Their hearts are in the right place and it is wonderful to see that. It is also heartwarming for our children to witness,” said Hale.

Vice principal of the school, Douglas Kinsey, said the food drive was an initiative which was started by their pupils. “They just came into my office and told me that they needed to use it as storage,” said Kinsey.

He credited Kemantha Naidoo for the drive. Naidoo, a Grade 11 pupil, collected food from her friends and schoolmates for the home. “We collected over 200 items consisting of tinned food and fresh vegetables,” she said.

“It is part of our social responsibility as community members to take care of the homes in our community.”

Naidoo said she saw the home on a regular basis, as she shared school transport with some of the home’s children. The aspiring crime scene investigator said this was one of two projects she was hoping to be involved in, “Next we will be collecting sanitary towels specifically for the Dignity Dreams foundation.”

The foundation helps girls from underprivileged backgrounds access sanitary towels so they don’t not miss school due to their monthly menstrual cycle.

Kinsey was proud of the steps his pupils had taken. “We will definitely always support them in any way we can when they come up with such ideas.

“This home was a great choice,” he said, speaking of the children’s home.

“It is well run, there’s structure and the children seem happy here.”
