Newtown’s feast of markets

NEWTOWN – Where do you go for the most energetic mix of culture, fashion and food?

Newtown Junction, of course, which debuts it’s Christmas Pop-up Market on 5 December.

Expect to see high quality, handmade goodies ranging from bags to shoes, paintings and much, much more. The market hopes to attract those who want to fill their festive stockings with unique gifts – and those who don’t mind being thoroughly entertained while they’re at it.

There will be a feast of entertainment to cater to everyone’s needs such as a live cooking demonstration, a writing workshop and a fitness demonstration to shake off a kilo or two, as well as live music from some of Jozi’s local artists.

The Christmas market will be open from 10am to 3pm. Then, on 6 December, Newtown Junction will be hosting the Cape Malay Market with a ton of authentic food, live bands, artisan booths and a full display of the Malay culture.

The food at the Cape Malay Market will be creatively grouped into a storyline to showcase the span of a person’s lifetime events, starting from doepmaal (name-giving celebration) right up to kifayyet (funeral fare). Then there will be a set of Christmas carols performed by South Africa’s most sought-after female imbongi or praise singer, Jessica Mbangeni, who will be accompanied by Dumza Maswana and the Gospel Crown Choir.

The Cape Malay Market will be open from 10am to 5pm.
