Local governance awarded in Midrand

MIDRAND - South African Local Governance Association's (Salga) CEO, Xolile George was recognised as the continental winner in the Public Enterprise sector of Global CEO Titans at the Building Nations 2015 Awards.

The awards ceremony, held at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, was attended by business leaders, decision-makers and captains of the industry. The organisation was awarded as a result of having achieved 98 percent of their objectives against their own annual performance plan during the 2014/2015 period.

According to George, the organisation has achieved improved clean audit outcomes three years consecutively after a sustained period of difficulties.

George is not a stranger to being a recipient of awards. In his previous roles as the executive director of community development and also the executive director of economic development in the City of Johannesburg, he was named as a Boss of the Year finalist last year.

Initially, George was recognised for his leadership at the Titans Africa Awards’ ceremony in July as the national winner in the public enterprises category. This automatically qualified him as a finalist in the continental global CEO category where he emerged as the winner.

He said, “As it is part of our mandate to recognise good work, it’s good to see other bodies recognising good work too. For me, this achievement tells me that there are people who appreciate what I am doing, and in turn, Salga is also getting the recognition it deserves both locally and internationally.”

He accepted the award as well as the responsibilities that come with it. “There is still a lot of work to do. We want to build an organisation that is more agile and responsive. We want to be known for our knowledge, where every municipality in the country thinks to call on us first.

“Our biggest focus going forward is the restoration of local government’s image and the connection between, and experience of, their citizens.”
