Let’s Clean Midrand does just that

MIDRAND - On 7 November, residents and business owners from Midrand gathered in support of the Let’s Clean Midrand's Blitz-Clean Day.

Working primarily along New Road, Lever Road and linked arterials, 60 volunteers from across Midrand spent three hours picking up litter, scraping off unsightly signs and removing illegal posters on pavements and billboards.

Lerato Mphefo, project leader of the Let’s Clean Midrand non-governmental organisation, whose aim is to see Midrand become an exemplary town for cleanliness said, “The support from the community and residents was amazing. The Sector 3 Community Policing Forum and Metro police were out in full force, ensuring that our volunteers were safe and protected from harm.”

Mphefo said their task was made easier by the City of Johannesburg’s Citizen Relationship and Urban Management Department. “A group of amazing council gardeners and related support staff used high-powered grass cutters to mow acres of overgrown grass and weeds. Cuttings were bagged and left for Pikitup to collect.

“By the time we arrived on Saturday, a lot of the grass had been mowed. Over 100 bags of litter had been collected.”

She also said the Department of Environmental Health has committed itself to issuing summonses to the owners of three plots in the area who have not maintained the plots to council standards.

Mphefo thanked Adcock Ingram, 4 Seasons Garden Service, Oasis Water, Makro Woodmead, Foce Property Investments, Promo Girls Clothing and Boulders Shopping Centre for their support.

Esme Bense, the initiator of the clean-up said, “It was back-breaking work, but so worth the effort. In addition, for me the most incredible part of the day was the amount of spirit and enthusiasm that the volunteers showed.”
