Unlicensed firearm gets men behind bars

MIDRAND - Three suspects aged between 21 and 31 were recently arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and suspected stolen property.

The trio was spotted on the corner of Alsation and West streets in Glen Austin on 29 October by patrolling Midrand police who thought they were behaving suspiciously.

The officers stopped the men in a red Volkswagen Golf at around 7pm. The suspects and the vehicle were then searched. Four rounds of ammunition were allegedly found on one suspect, an Okapi knife on the second suspect, and the third suspect was allegedly in possession of the unlicensed firearm.

The police also found an LG home theatre system, a cellphone charger and a crowbar which the suspects could not produce proof of purchase for and failed to explain where they had acquired the property.

“All three suspects were arrested and will appear in Alexandra Magistrates’ Court soon facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and suspected stolen goods,” said the police’s head of communications, Constable Matome Tlamela.
