Midrand SPCA concerned about neglect of animals during festive season

MIDRAND - As the festive season nears, Midrand SPCA is concerned about the treatment and neglect of animals.

Chairperson of the animal shelter, Brenda Lucas, said that in December last year, 82 animals were surrendered to Midrand SPCA by their owners and 32 strays were taken into the shelter, and it became really tough to feed all these animals without sufficient funding.

“Vorna Valley and Noordwyk have been two very problematic areas in the past when it comes to the neglect of animals,” she said.

“Other areas that are concerning are Kaalfontein, Ivory Park, Ebony Park, Mayibuye, Klipfontein, Allandale, Clayville and the Winnie Mandela informal settlement.”

The SPCA is urging the public to keep their animals safe and away from swimming pools and other dangerous places. The society also encourages people to have their pets microchipped.

“Every year we struggle with the high number of stray animals that have no identification and we cannot inform their owners of their whereabouts. A scared animal can run for miles and could end up in a different area altogether,” said Lucas.

She said in November last year, 31 stray cats and dogs were brought to the shelter, and only 11 were claimed by their owners. The rest had no form of identification.

Of the 32 stray cats and dogs taken in by the SPCA in December, only nine were claimed by their owners.

December is the SPCA’s busiest month, and Lucas said the shelter was requesting donations of food.
