David Krut Projects presents Two Social Pacifiers

JOHANNESBURG – David Krut Projects will host an exhibition by Ethiopian artist Endale Desalegn from 5 November to 19 December.

The exhibition is titled Two Social Pacifiers, and will feature a number of prints and paintings by Desalegn who is about to complete his second residency at the David Krut Projects Parkwood studio.

Desalegn was born in Ethiopia in a period referred to in the country as ‘the Derg’ which embraced communism as an ideology. “It is striking that the hammer and sickle universally represent communism, yet there is no one recognizable symbol for capitalism,” he stated.

This new body of work is described as a meditation on the way we look at everyday objects in light of the social structures that determine how we relate to the world. Desalegn uses metaphorical visual tropes such as babies’ milk bottles and a pacifier to draw connections between natural and constructed systems of social dependence. The milk bottle symbolises an adult’s relationship to an ATM, the pacifier evokes methods of compensation used to soothe unfulfilled desires.

The exhibition promises to be an eye-opening experience and a definite must-see for art fans.

The Two Social Pacifiers exhibition will run from 5 November to 19 December at the David Krut Projects Parkwood Studio, 142 Jan Smuts Avenue.
