Spelling bee gets Midrand’s attention

HALFWAY HOUSE- A new events management company, Alpha, has emerged in Midrand.

The company was founded by three young men, Mike Phiri, Mora Mohlaka and Ashton Ndlovu, who have combined their love for the arts and education and created the Midrand Schools Spelling Bee competition.

Glen Austin High School and Midrand High School recently participated in the competition.

“We, as the initiators of the event, recognised an inefficiency in the spelling aspect of pupils’ language,” said Phiri. He said they realised that pupils struggled with spelling even at tertiary level.

“We are tertiary students ourselves, so the best way was to aim at the source, that being schools. We believe the schools accepted the initiative as they also realised the rewards that the Spelling Bee initiative could have.”

Phiri said he was impressed by the level of competition between the schools as it kept everyone in attendance on the edge of their seats. “Both schools gave it their all, it was virtually impossible to tell who would win the gold trophy at the end of the night,” he said.

Midrand High School won the trophy by virtue of three of their pupils being able to spell their way into the fourth and final round, while Glen Austin’s pupils fought up until the third round.

“It was very exciting for the parents, teachers and peers, not to mention [those competing],” said Phiri.

“Community support was exceptional, especially considering the fact that it’s the first time in Midrand where schools have met for an inter-school spelling bee. Parents and peers came in their numbers to witness this initiative first hand.”
