Guests enjoy craft beer and gourmet sandwiches under the sun

KYALAMI - Red Ladies hosted a family picnic where Copperlake craft beer and gourmet sandwiches were sold at Lonely Oak in Kyalami to raise funds for Shumbashaba Charity.

Red Ladies is a charity organisation comprising a collection of friends connected by a common purpose. Each member of the organisation wants to make a difference, big or small, in the lives of those less fortunate, whether it be the lives of people or animals.

This year, the organisation chose to support Shumbashaba Charity, which provides therapy for Diepsloot children who have physical and mental disabilities through the use of horses at Shillelagh Farm, Diepsloot Agricultural Holdings.

Shumbashaba has developed therapeutic programmes that involve both riding and non-riding. The therapeutic riding programme offers hippotherapy (therapy using the characteristic movements of a horse to provide carefully graded motor and sensory input) for people with disabilities with the opportunity for them to progress to riding as sport and recreation. The non-riding programme offers life skills and counselling using the Eagala (a non-profit organisation in which horses are used in the treatment of mental health) methodology recognised world-wide as being a powerful way of helping people restore a sense of self-worth and purpose.

Founder of Shumbashaba, Sharon Boyce said, “We are grateful and humbled that the Red Ladies are hosting such an event. It shows that when people come together they can do a lot for others.

“I have been working in the field of horses for 25 years doing community work and in 2013 Shumbashaba started being a not-for-profit trust which is dedicated to the well-being of children’s health. We are a part of the Diepsloot community, hence we work with children from there.”

According to Red Ladies’ Eve Langkilde, the organisation looks for charities that are reputable and which aren’t receiving grants from the government.

“We have found that people want to give money to charities and it is a privilege to help give people the opportunity to give their money to charities such a Shumbashaba,” Langkilde said.

There was face painting as well as jumping castles for children, and DJ AL of Mix FM entertained the guests.
