Van der Westhuizen was honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the 2015 Gauteng Sports Awards at Silverstar Casino. The donation was part of the award which allowed Van der Westhuizen to make a donation to a school of his choice.
Speaking at the awards, MEC for Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Molebatsi Bopape said, “Joost wore his colours with pride, determination and courage.”
Acting principal of the school, Sally Luyt said the donation would be used for much-needed school supplies.
