Help clean up Midrand

MIDRAND - In a move that is set to see Midrand become cleaner, a group of business owners, residents and activists have come together to initiate a clean-up campaign.

With the involvement of the City of Johannesburg’s Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (Crum) department, the initiative wants to beautify Midrand once more.

The brainchild of businesswoman Esme Bense, the Letscleanmidrand Initiative is a call to action to remove the rubble, litter and unsightly signs that adorn the town.

Bense said, “Midrand used to be the most beautiful, clean area to live and work in. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case. Grass verges are overgrown, litter is discarded with reckless abandon – and people have lost respect for the place.

“The Letscleanmidrand Initiative will change that. We all know that government needs help and we, as residents, business owners and concerned citizens, need to do our part to ensure that our home is attractive and inviting, offering all of us a return on our investment.”

The initiative will begin with a series of Blitz-Clean Days – the first of which will be held on 7 November. Business owners, employees, residents, activists, concerned citizens, volunteers and school-going youth will come together and systematically tackle the unsightly problems in the area.

Bense said, “By cutting down overgrown verges and vacant plots of land in the area, we will reduce the hiding places for criminal elements, thereby helping to reduce crime in the area.”

The first Blitz-Clean Day will tackle New Road (and its main arteries), the vacant plot next to Mr Price in the Carlswald Shopping Centre, Lever Road and the informal taxi rank area at the entrance of Carlswald Shopping Centre.
