Halfway House scout, Burn, is fired up with passion

MIDRAND - Troy Burn, a 15-year-old member of the Halfway House Scouts wrote to Midrand Reporter about getting children involved in outdoor activities such as Scouting.

Burn, who is assistant patrol leader of Buffalo Patrol, 1st Halfway House Scout group, is hoping to achieve Springbok Scout status. He had to make a display board promoting Scouts, display it in a public space for a month and get it published in a local newspaper as part of his advancement.

He urged parents to get children involved in Scouts and attend troop meetings which are held at the 1st Halfway House Scout group hall located on Church Street in Halfway House, every Friday night.

There are meetings for Cubs for ages seven to 11 from 4pm to 6pm, and Scouts meetings for ages 11 to 18 from 6pm to 9pm.

“Everyone is welcome to join,” said Burn.

“One of the Scout laws is, ‘A Scout is friend to all and a brother to every other Scout’, and it is, therefore, a good chance to make new friends and learn how to interact with people of different ages and cultures, and can give you a sense of belonging.”

He said some of the fun things he had done as a Scout over the years were hiking, camping and building a raft and sleeping on it overnight. “In Scouting there are a lot of interest badges that you can achieve, but there are also advancement badges, with the highest honour being the Springbok award, which I hope to achieve before I am 18,” said Burn.

An adventure that all Scouts work towards, which Burn hopes to attend next year in December, is the senior Cederberg Scout adventure which is a 10-day 110km hike in the Cederberg mountains in the Western Cape.

Fellow Scouter, Doug Rix said, “We commend Burn for his example and look forward to observing his further growth as a young man and junior leader at the 1st Halfway House Cub and Scout group. May he progress through to the Scout programme en route to the ultimate achievement of the Springbok Scout award.”
