Community apprehends hijacking suspect

MIDRAND - A motorist was recently hijacked while trying to assist at an accident scene in Ebony Park, however, members of the community apprehended the suspect that same day.

It is alleged that on 17 October, a motorist was driving his Toyota Quantum from Clayville to a garage in Ebony Park when he noticed that a car on the side of the road had been involved in an accident.

Ivory Park police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela, said the complainant stopped with the intention to help the accident victim, but as he got out of the car an unknown man approached him carrying a knife and demanded he give him the vehicle.

“The suspect drove away in the vehicle, but the same vehicle was later recovered in Ivory Park Ext 14 that evening after the suspect allegedly bumped another vehicle.”

Sekgobela explained that members of the community apprehended the suspect who was behaving suspiciously. Police were called to the scene and, on arrival, found that the vehicle had been hijacked. The suspect was immediately arrested.

The suspect will appear at Tembisa Magistrates’ Court soon for possession of a hijacked motor vehicle.
