Recognition for productivity

MIDRAND - Productivity South Africa, a Midrand-based company dedicated to increasing South Africa’s overall productivity, recently held their annual National Productivity Awards at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park.

The organisation, together with the Ekurhuleni Municipality and the South African Department of Labour, welcomed guests to an evening of celebrating those who excel in productivity. The list of winners included schools, government entities and businesses within the private sector.

Some of the major winners included Tshedza Concrete Art from Limpopo in the emerging sector category, and Bakutudi Co-operative, also from Limpopo, in the co-operative sector category. Gauteng-based GIBB Engineering and Architecture won the top award in the corporate sector category.

Department of Labour Deputy Minister Phatekile Holomisa said the awards ceremony aims to improve productivity and competitiveness within the workplace through recognising individuals, organisations and communities for their contribution to building the country’s productive capacity.

“Productivity must become a standard item on the SA agenda. [We must all] treat it as an enabler for growth and not as a threat to jobs,” he said, referring to processes such as mechanisation, where machinery is used to do work that previously required a human being.

Keynote speaker at the awards and acting general secretary of the Congress of South African Trade Unions, Bheki Ntshalintshali, said businesses, labour and government need to work together to achieve a common goal within the workplace.

According to the chairperson of the Productivity SA Board, Mthunzi Mdwaba, the awards provide a platform to inspire a competitive and productive South Africa. “Productivity improvement is considered the most effective way of ensuring ongoing competitiveness, economic growth and, consequently, more wealth for all,” said Mdwaba.
