Acorn Foundation makes donations

MIDRAND - Charity organisation, Acorn Foundation, held its annual Pro-Am Golf Series fundraising event at Blue Valley Golf Estate in Midrand.

Participating golfers paid R12 000 per four-ball, and the proceeds were used to help three chosen beneficiaries who received their donations at the prize-giving ceremony after the event.

One of the beneficiaries was Caitlin Afrika-Peters who was given a special needs pushchair called a buggy, valued at about R15 000. Afrika-Peters was born with a rare genetic disorder, trisomy, which has left her mentally and physically disabled. Her father, Enricho Peters, was there to accept the donation and also spoke of his daughter’s battle with the disease.

Another beneficiary was Brighton Gatsheni, a young man who washed cars for a living. He had approached the foundation for help to advertise his business so he could earn more money to finance his studies. The foundation advertised his business at the prize-giving and they bought him a car wash start-up kit worth R20 000.

The third beneficiary was the Tomorrow Trust. Sue Smit, founding member and director of the foundation said, “We have committed to sponsor a bursary of R100 000 to one orphaned and vulnerable child next year.” The trust is a non-profit organisation that helps such children receive an education.
