Universal eye care for all

JOBURG – Eye Care Awareness Month is being celebrated globally, 21 September until 18 October, and this year’s theme is Universal eye health – eye care for all.

In light of this, the Gauteng Department of Health advised everyone to get their eyes tested regularly to avoid eye complications which could lead to blindness.

The department’s spokesperson, Steve Mabona, said according to the World Health Organisation at least half of all eye complications can be avoided through regular eye tests. Mabona said, “Have your eyes tested by an ophthalmologist or optometrist every second year, and always wear sunglasses or tinted lenses when you are in the sun.”

He added that engaging in healthy lifestyle activities such as exercise and healthy eating, also helped prevent eye-related systemic illnesses such as hypertension and diabetes.

Mabona said pregnant mothers should also ensure good antenatal care in order to avoid congenital eye problems in their children.
