Declaration document gets more cities involved in ecomobility
SANDTON – City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Parks Tau recently gathered the media at the Industrial Development Corporation building in Sandton to launch the Johannesburg Declaration on EcoMobility and Climate Change document.
The document will be presented at the United Nations Climate Summit to be held in Paris at the end of this year. Tau explained that the document sends a strong message from local government leaders to those attending the climate conference.
“Urban transport is key in addressing climate change,” he said.
“The document is lobbying other cities to adopt the Ecomobility Festival as well.”
Tau said the first week of the festival in Sandton was successful and he looks forward to the rest of October.

At the media briefing, Tau was joined by deputy secretary general of International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives, Monika Zimmermann, and local government leaders to discuss the declaration’s content.
Zimmermann said the document aimed to get more cities involved in the ecomobility way of life. “We are committed to adopting urban mobility policies and making our cities people-friendly,” added Zimmermann. She also said the document addressed the struggles of climate and environmental issues. “Ecomobility gives dignity back to walking and cycling,” she said.
Zimmermann added that the document talks to governments and urges them to establish policies and legislation that is supportive to ecomobility infrastructure. “We call on leaders to put ecomobility high on their agenda and to develop their cities around ecomobility.”

Showing support for the declaration document were city leaders from Cameroon, Columbia and Iceland who all joined the conversation about ecomobility at the media briefing.
