Book club in Ivory Park

IVORY PARK - Katlego Makunyane and Phillip Mkhwanazi are entrepreneurs who have a love of books and organising events.

Their combined passions gave birth to PKM², an Ivory Park-based events company headed by the two. Under the umbrella of the company, they established Ruziva Rwedu book club. The club’s mandate is to help young people get to know themselves and to gain enough confidence in themselves to make a success of their lives.

“There is a lot of potential in us, as young people, that most of us are not even aware of. We thought that we should do something about this identified problem,” said the 23-year-old Makunyane.

“I recently developed a love of motivational books and would go back home and discuss the books with my partner and friends. I then figured that maybe this love I have for books would be the solution to bring knowledge to our society,” she said.

Makunyane added that the idea of a book club popped into her head and she was excited by it. “The book club is a platform to network and promote ourselves and the different skills that we have.”

She said the youth, business people, publishers, writers, artists and people with an interest in books are invited to join them on Saturdays at Baruka’s Buy and Braai for a book discussion.

All attendees are asked to arrive promptly at 6pm and to dress formally. The book that is up for discussion for the month of October is Know Yourself by Nele Phele. “The book is an appropriate choice because we will be gathering to encourage, motivate and build each other,” said Makunyane.
