Community outreach programmes empower women

MIDRAND - An infrastructure and development organisation led by women, Bunengi Group, recently established community outreach programmes to target and empower young women in South Africa.

The programmes have been rolled out in a number of Johannesburg colleges, including in Midrand.

Executive of the group, Dudu Dube said, “We strongly believe in giving back and uplifting the communities we work in. Economic community-based initiatives are key to [addressing] unemployment in poorer communities, with an emphasis on the advancement of the girl child.”

As part of their commitment to empowering women, Bunengi recently sponsored budding model and hospitality management student, Katlego Monyapheng, by purchasing a dress for her for the gala finale of the Miss Commonwealth 2015 pageant.

“We pay attention, not only to the economic but social activities of the communities that we work in with the intention to empower and uplift them,” said Dube.

“We have a particular interest in the previously disadvantaged population groups and female students in those communities.[Monyapheng] was identified through our science, technology, engineering and maths (Stem) initiatives in one of the local colleges, as a student with ambition and talent, so when her request for sponsorship came through we decided to help her.”

Monyapheng said, “I firmly believe in giving back to the community I come from. I am very grateful to Bunengi for deciding to sponsor me and I hope I did the company and my community proud during my time as a finalist in the pageant.”
