Improvement district manager for Sandton Central Management District, Elaine Jack said, “One of the aims of the EcoMobility World Festival is to give people a preview of a future transport system where public transport, walking and cycling become the modes of choice.
“For public transport during the festival, people can choose from Metrobus, Gautrain, Gautrain buses, and Putco as well as minibus taxis.”
The park and ride system will require commuters to park at specific points and pay R10 to travel by bus into the Sandton CBD.
The park and ride facilities include:
- Johannesburg North: The facilities will be primarily based at Montecasino with 1 500 parking bays open for residents. There will be Gautrain and Putco buses travelling to Sandton via William Nicol Drive
- Johannesburg South: Maponya Mall and Orlando Stadium have 300 and 250 parking bays respectively. There will be Rea Vaya buses travelling from Lakeview Station to Park Station via the T2 trunk route, and Thokoza Park to Braamfontein via Soweto highway. The Gautrain buses will travel from Park Station directly to Sandton
- Johannesburg West: The west will have parking facilities at Cresta Shopping Centre, Brightwater Commons, Westgate Shopping Centre and Randburg Square. Cresta Shopping Centre will have 500 parking bays and Metrobus services will travel via a dedicated public transport lane on Republic Road. Brightwater Commons will have a Gautrain feeder bus travelling on a dedicated lane on Republic Road. Westgate Shopping Centre will have Metrobus Services travelling in the same lane. There will also be minibus taxis travelling on Republic Road
- Johannesburg East: The east will see Emperors Palace being used with 1 000 parking bays available for residents. Commuters will be able to use the Gautrain from Rhodesfield and Marlboro. A Gautrain feeder bus will travel to Rosebank for resident parking at Melrose Arch. Balfour Park Shopping Centre will have 250 parking bays and Metrobuses will travel to Sandton via a dedicated lane on Katherine Drive. Innesfree Park will have 300 parking bays with minibus taxis also using Katherine Drive.
