Alleged shortage of fire trucks at some Joburg stations

JOBURG – The Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) has spoken out against allegations that three of its fire stations are operating without fire trucks.

This follows an enquiry from a resident who sought an explanation for the alleged absence of fire trucks at the Sandton, Northview and Alexandra fire stations for some time. The resident who wished to remain anonymous said,

“The Northview and Alex stations haven’t had fire [trucks] for the past month, while the Sandton station has been without one for a few months now.”

The concerned resident alleged that the only equipment available at the three stations was the rescue unit apparatus which was used in accidents.

Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson for EMS, confirmed that the Northview and Alex stations did not have their fire trucks at the moment. “The two fire engines are at the workshops for repairs, but they have other vehicles they can use in case of an emergency,” he said.

Mulaudzi refuted claims that the Sandton station was in the same situation, saying that the station had a fully-operational ladder and vehicle at its station.

“[Even in such an instance that stations don’t have their engines], we make sure that there is always a vehicle which can respond to any emergency, be it a fire or rescue operation at all times,” he stressed.

“We also want to reassure [residents] that we are still capable of responding to any emergency which might occur throughout the city of Johannesburg.”
