World champ in our midst

BEAULIEU - Beaulieu Preparatory School pupil Demi Kendal recently represented South Africa at the World Championships of Performing Arts 2015 in Long Beach, Los Angeles and brought home gold.

The South African team, which included Kendal, was invited to participate in the world championships in America which took place from 8 to 17 July when over 50 countries from around the world participated in various categories over a two-week period.

The 12-year-old participated in the semifinals and the final round of the competition and achieved two gold, two silver and three bronze medals. This earned her a place in Team South Africa, and also earned her her Provincial and Honorary colours.

Kendal took part in acting and modelling and managed to walk away with medals in each division. She earned herself 11 medals in total. She was also selected to participate in the organisers of the championships’ Worldstar showcase.

“Being in the showcase puts her as one of the top three junior actors in the world,” said Lynette Gray from Kyalami Schools Organisation.

“And to top it off, she also walked away with a trophy for the Junior Classical Acting Champion of the World category.”

She also said Kendal made her school and coach, Jill Avis from Upstage, proud. “[Avis] was delighted about all of her achievements and looks forward to a very bright acting future for her,” she said.
