Cleaning up the spruit

JOBURG - After weeks of preparation, the annual Spruit Day was a success in the north of Johannesburg with residents coming out to clean up the Braamfontein Spruit from Fourways to Sandton.

The initiative, which started last year, was a momentous community gathering with 14 residents’ associations taking part in conjunction with the City of Johannesburg and ADT Security.

Event organiser, Ian Tumiel, said it was a hectic day with numbers of people coming through to help out from 9am. He added that he was very pleased with the turnout with more than 30 volunteers helping at the Bryanston East section of the spruit alone.

The day also saw more than 200 trees being planted along the spruit, with 16 being planted at the Bryanston East section of the river with the help of first runner-up of Miss Earth South Africa, Jade Axon, and non-profit organisation Green Beings.

The Nissan Magic programme was also involved. The programme gives ambassadors a Nissan truck to drive around in for a month to perform random acts of kindness. Ambassador for the programme, Siya Sangweni-Fynn, used the truck to transport the trees that were planted at the Bryanston East section.

Axon said she hoped the clean-up created awareness among motorists who drove past. “We need to do something for the environment,” she added.
