Spruit Day success

PARKHURST – Braamfontein Spruit received some much-needed tender loving care by members of the Parkhurst Village Residents’ and Business Owners Association.

They were joined by residents from Victory Park to clean the spruit between the Twelfth Street pedestrian bridge and Victory Park shopping centre.

This formed part of Spruit Day, which has been held annually and hosted by different residents’ organisations from Emmarentia Dam right through to Kyalami.

“It’s a great initiative,” said the association’s chairperson, Natalie Zimmelman.

“And also a great way for local residents to meet one another and work together for a good cause. This year’s Spruit Day was organised by the Bryanston East Community Forum.”

Litter bags were provided to volunteers and a new dustbin was also installed near the bridge which was sponsored by Cyril Robertson from Rosebank and Sandton Roofing. Robertson himself has loved Braamfontein Spruit since he was a child, and has been cleaning up the spruit in his own capacity almost weekly for the past 18 years.

As a follow up to Spruit Day, the association has organised a Trial Cycle Kayak challenge which will take place on 27 September.

“We have organised a unique adventure challenge to raise funds for further maintenance work along the Braamfontein Spruit trail,” Zimmelman continued.

“The adventure consists of a 5km run along the parkrun route in Bryanston, followed by a 15km mountain bike cycle to Emmarentia Dam. It will finish with a lap around the dam on a kayak, which will be supplied. We need teams to represent all suburbs in the adventure to compete against neighbouring resident associations.”

The event will begin at 7am and the entrance fee will be a R150 donation toward the spruit’s maintenance.

“Our objective is to raise enough funds to paint the two pedestrian bridges below Delta Park,” Zimmelman concluded.

Entries are limited and participation is on a first come first serve basis. To enter, send an e-mail to admin@becf.co.za with your names, ID numbers, ages and gender.
