UPDATE: Shootout in Midrand, 2 suspects arrested

MIDRAND - It is believed a shootout took place in Midrand on Wednesday afternoon.

UPDATE: 23 September 2015, 7pm – Provincial Police spokesperson Tsekiso Mofokeng said At 2pm today police were following information on wanted suspects, which led them to Noordwyk where a suspect  shot at police and tried to flee but police arrested him.

A rifle and pistol and live rounds of amminition and a stolen vehicle were recovered.

A second  investigation led to another complex where 2 other vehicles, an Amarok and a BMW were recovered and a second suspect arrested.

No police were injured during the shootout.

The suspects will soon appear at Midrand Magistrates Court soon on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and suspected stolen vehicles Police are still investigating the case as more information and suspects may be caught.

UPDATE: 23 September 2015, 16:30 pm –  According to Midrand Police’s station commander, Colonel Steven Moodley, there was a shootout between the police and suspects.

An R5 riffle was recovered along with a pistol and two magazines were recovered. Two suspects have been arrested following the shootout.

According to a resident who witnessed the shootout and tweeted about the shootout, @highly_fav_G, a hijacking allegedly took place at Noordwyk, Garden Road.

@highly_fav_G tweeted to the Midrand Reporter, ” The thugs tried to hide at a complex that’s being built and shots just ran. The other guys ran away on foot and the one guy was caught by the construction workers. He was put in a car and driven off before the cops got there. Then all of a sudden more shots ran out and people ran like ants and there was screaming.”

The eyewitness, @highly_fav_G further told the Midrand Reporter that police arrived 15 minutes later with helicopters.
