Diners Club celebrates the best wine lists

JOBURG – The Diners Club Winelist Awards held at The Saxon Hotel recently recognised eateries that take great care in their wine selection and also pair food with wine perfectly.

Guests were invited to witness a variation of restaurants contesting for top honours, including Sandton restaurants such as Signature in Morningside, Turn ‘n Tender in Bryanston, as well as The Saxon Hotel in Sandhurst.

A total of 38 restaurants achieved diamond status, which is the highest accolade with a total score of 91 percent or higher, while 19 restaurants were awarded platinum status, 33 were awarded gold status and two were awarded silver status.

“These awards are more than just about a wine list, but is recognition for the restaurants,” said Dave Hughes, veteran wine critic and author who was part of the judging panel. He said hundreds of restaurant menus had been submitted by licensed local restaurants which met the entry criteria were carefully assessed by the judges.

The Diners Club Winelist Awards do not only attract restaurants eager to gain recognition for their class and style, but it also attracts patrons who understand that the perfect meal is greatly enhanced by matching a fine wine.

“Each year it becomes increasingly difficult to select the best restaurants that offer outstanding wine lists,” added Hughes.

“However, the cream always rises to the top and this year has been no different. The winning restaurants are tenacious, almost pedantic, in ensuring that their offering continues to excite the palettes of their customers.”
