Samwu signs salary agreement with Salga

JOBURG - The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) recently signed a wage and salary agreement with the South African Local Government Association (Salga).

Salga represents the country’s 278 municipalities. Samwu spokesperson Papikie Mohale said the signing comes after a rigorous mandate took place which resulted in the Samwu central executive committee confirming that the majority of its members had acted on the facilitator’s report without any additions or subtractions.

Mohale said, “Municipal workers should receive their salary increases as of this month back-dated from July. We would like to thank our members for their patience during the negotiation process and the trust they had bestowed upon our negotiation team.”

The signed agreement will include:

  •  A multi-year agreement effective from 1 July this year to 30 June 2018
  •  A seven percent salary increase across the board in the first year of the agreement, and consumer price index (CPI) plus one percent for the remainder of the agreement
  •  A sectoral minimum wage of R6 014.93 with effect from 1 July
  •  Retention of the 60:40 employer medical contribution, however, the maximum employer contribution will increase to R3 871
  •  A new housing allowance dispensation for low earners who are currently not servicing bonds of R350, and a R700 homeowner’s allowance.
