Heartbeat receives revamped car

MIDRAND - Heartbeat, a non-government organisation, was the beneficiary of a recent Facebook competition run by Mix Telematics and received a car which recently underwent a makeover.

Followers of the Midrand-based fleet management company on social media had the opportunity to submit what they considered to be the ugliest car in South Africa. The winner of that competition, Michaela Thomas, received a brand new Mitsubishi Mirage in exchange for her rusty VW Polo Classic.

“The car has certainly been cleaned up,” said Grant Fraser, Mix Telematics marketing director, speaking of the car that was handed over to Heartbeat.

The polo was given a makeover and, on 17 August, the keys to the sparkling white ride were given to Heartbeat. The organisation operates in seven of the nine provinces in South Africa, and travel for the representatives of the organisation can be challenging.

“This car means so much to us,” said Sibusiso Molimi, a board member of the organisation.

“We provide childcare workers who cater to the emotional needs of the child, and sometimes they have to travel to children’s homes or take them to the hospital. This car will indeed come in handy.”

Molimi said the organisation aimed to bring joy to as many children in South Africa as possible. “You see the reaction on their faces when we arrive, this too will mean a lot to them,” he said.

Fraser said it was easy to choose Heartbeat as the benefactor, as they had worked with them on previous occasions and admired the work they do.

“It is important to know that the donation you make, as an organisation, will go a long way and will make a real difference,” said Fraser.
