The arrest came after police received a tip-off from a witness that a Mercedes-Benz E250 had been hijacked. Ivory Park police spokesperson Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela said, “It is alleged that a man saw three suspects hijacking his daughter in a driveway in Ebony Park, Midrand. He notified the tracking company and shortly after, the vehicle was spotted driving towards Tembisa with four suspects inside and the female victim [aged 31].”
Tembisa police sector vehicles, Ivory Park police and tracking members gave chase and a police helicopter was summoned to the scene and helped police on the ground to chase the suspects. The car was dumped in Ivory Park Ext 7 with the victim still inside. Three of the suspects were arrested. Two 9mm pistols and one magazine with two live rounds were recovered.
Sekgobela said a fourth suspect fled the scene and is still on the run. The suspects in custody will soon appear at Tembisa Magistrates’ Court facing charges of hijacking, kidnapping and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Police are appealing to members of the community to assist with information that could lead to the arrest of the fourth suspect.
