Wheelchair tennis camps for Ivory Park’s best

IVORY PARK - Wheelchair Tennis South Africa hosted the development tennis camps from 15 to 16 August at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Centre in Soweto; Retondale Tennis Club in Pretoria; and Khayelitsha in Cape Town.

The camps were aimed at improving and increasing the level of play and knowledge of promising, grassroots tennis players.

The camps saw over 80 young tennis enthusiasts, including former South African number one men’s player Sydwell Mathonsi and number two Desmond Monyamane.

Camp directors Patrick Selepe, Siyabulela Nkachela and Archie Lemeko conducted the camps with assistance from regional tennis coaches.

The country’s top-ranked woman in the sport, Kgothatso Montjane, made an appearance at the Pretoria camp and delivered a moving motivational speech to encourage the players to work hard on the court and to always keep in mind the importance of education. She also brought Babolat racket covers as her pledge to boost the tennis careers of the future stars.

Selepe said, “I see a great improvement in some of the junior players’ thinking on the court; we do hope what is learnt here at the camps will be put into practice daily by the players.”

He also thanked their sponsors Airports Company South Africa and other contributors.

“The regional camps are a winning culture and it is going to continue,” said Wheelchair Tennis South Africa general manager Karen Losch.

“The new players that come in will understand that our culture is all about developing upcoming stars and to give everyone an opportunity to grow.”
