This follows the death of five members of the police and two members of Metro police who lost their lives in separate crime-related incidents. This brings the total loss of police lives in Gauteng to more than 460 in the past 10 years.
Speaking at the vigil, Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane said, “We will act against those who are killing. We are going to hunt down those who are killing our members… We will make sure that they land up behind bars.
“One cop killer, one life sentence. No criminal should be protected in any church, no criminal should be protected in any household, and no criminal should be protected in any community.”
Founder of CrimeLine, Yusuf Abramjee said, “Stop cop killings. We must protect our police at every turn. Enough is enough. We must take a stand.”
The vigil was attended by hundreds of police officers, Metro police and Gautrans Provincial Police officers.
Also attending was the National Police Commissioner General Riyah Piyega, and Premier of Gauteng, David Makhura.
Douglasdale Community Policing Forum chairperson, Jean Berdou, condemned the recent police murders and urged all South Africans to stand up by providing police with information.
“This is simply unacceptable and represents a major assault on the State,” he said.
