Motorists continue to express anguish over Main Road speed drop

KYALAMI - The speed reduction war in Kyalami is continuing unabated.

Motorists are persistently complaining about the speed reduction along Main Road from 80km/h to 60km/h, despite an elaborate explanation from Ward 94 councillor John Mendelsohn.

Mendelsohn entered the speed fray last week, arguing that the speed limit was designed to curb recurring fatal accidents along the two-kilometre stretch of road.

But a motorist who only identified himself as Johan would not have any of that. “A convenient median lined with trees to prop up the already-approved speed cameras, and zap some more of the little cash that is left in Joe Public’s pocket, maybe?” fumed Johan in a written complaint to Fourways Review.

He said the road was wide enough to accommodate speeding traffic.

Johan also questioned why Main Road was targeted ahead of what he termed a death bend along Chattan Road in Lonehill.

“This stretch of road has the notorious death bend, the merge at Chattan Road where many accidents occur, the narrow bridge over the Jukskei [River] where cars often park on the soft shoulder, several two-way stop intersections and road narrowings. All of these areas are the scene of frequent accidents,” said Johan.
