Nashua puts a smile on kids’ faces for Mandela Day

WOODMEAD – Aimed at honouring the extraordinary life and legacy of the late Nelson Mandela, the Nashua Children’s Charity Foundation recently hosted children and their caregivers at their offices for a charity handout event.

The event took place on 17 July and saw 72 children between the ages of six and 10 receive food and clothes, as well as packed items for their respective charities.

Present at the initiative was Miss South Africa 2015, Liesl Laurie, who spoke of the importance of making a difference in the lives of children.

“We handed out goodies and seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces and knowing that a [huge] difference is being made in their lives is the most important part,” she said.

She added that taking part in the initiative was also her way to honour Mandela, whom she never got the chance to meet, and other heroes of the struggle for their role during apartheid.

Her words were echoed by Helen Fraser, chief executive officer for the foundation, who said Nashua decided to embrace the special day by giving back to the children.

“It really is about the children and giving back to them because they are the future of our country,” she said.

Fraser added that the foundation was not just focused on doing something on the day, but was also involved in the daily caring of its beneficiaries.

She concluded that it was about making a sustainable impact in the children’s lives and giving them the dignity they deserve.

The foundation’s Mandela Day initiative took place in Woodmead and saw 12 charities also receive packed items.

The Nashua Children’s Charity Foundation supports almost 15 000 underprivileged children on a daily basis by providing food, cleaning materials and toiletries to a network of children’s charities, in the hopes of creating sustainable, child-friendly living conditions.
