Lipizzaners for Mandela Day

KYALAMI - A vibrant and exciting show awaits equestrian enthusiasts when the Lipizzaner Centre presents a special show with African music and colourful costumes in honour of Mandela Day.

Lipizzaner’s are the well-known white horses characterised by a perfect and noble physique, graceful movement, the ability to learn and stamina. They resemble the typical parade horse and are a marvel to the eye. They are usually born brown or black and gradually fade to white between the ages of six and 10. It is the world’s oldest breed of horse.

The first South African Lipizzaner’s came to the country in 1944 from war-torn Europe, rescued by Count Jankovich-Besan.

In 1951, Major George Iwanowski left Poland for South Africa and met Jankovich-Besan at the Royal Show in Pietermaritzburg, and was offered a Lipizzaner to train. It was then that the idea for the Kyalami Equestrian Centre was conceived.

The show on 19 July starts at 10.30am in Kyalami.

All proceeds of the event will go to Yenzani Children’s Home.
