Incubating future photographers

DIEPSLOOT - BUDDING photographers from Diepsloot took advantage of a course aimed at teaching them the foundations of the art.

The five-day course was hosted by NextGen Photo Academy at the Riversands Incubation Hub from 29 June to 3 July. The hub provided the course in a bid to give them access to better career opportunities through skill development.

Professional instructors Khula Jiji, Timothy Griesel and Pierre van der Walt coached the group on all the technical aspects of photography using audio visual presentations in a formal classroom setting.

Participants were also given the chance to apply their newly-acquired skills in a practical setting using Fuji X-M1 cameras generously provided by FujiFilm South Africa.

“It’s been a fantastic experience for [the academy] to work with such enthusiastic and eager individuals. We are looking forward to seeing what opportunities they are able to create in their own community with photography in the months to come,” said Van der Walt.

Course participant, Martha Matjila, said that she was grateful for the opportunity to learn a new skill. “When I started, I didn’t even know how to hold a camera. Now I’m much more confident and I’ve been shown how to compose good photographs,” she said.

NextGen Photo Academy offers a variety of paid-for courses, workshops, excursions and photographic experiences to amateurs, enthusiasts and professional photographers from all walks of life.
