UPDATE: Taxis gather on R55 following shooting incident

WOODMEAD - There were reports of a resurgence of taxi violence on the morning of 14 July.

UPDATE: 14 July 07.04 am

There are reports of a number of taxis gathered outside World of Golf, at the corner of Maxwell Drive and the R55 in Woodmead.

Metro Police and Saps are reported to be on scene.

Residents are urged to avoid the area if possible.

 

UPDATE: 13 July 2.38pm

According to Sandton Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela the incident which was reported as taxi violence was a random drive-by shooting.

A number of taxis had been parked at an informal taxi rank on the R55 in Woodmead.

A taxi pulled up next to one of the parked taxis and fired a shot.

The taxi driver was in the parked taxi at the time of the shooting however he was unharmed.

It is still unclear as to why the other taxi driver fired a shot.

2.12pm

There were reports of taxi violence on the R55 in Woodmead on 13 July.

Taxi drivers allegedly fired shots into the air however no injuries were reported.

Some reports stated that around 200 taxis were involved in the incident.

Police arrived on scene at about 2pm.

A reporter is enroute to the scene of the alleged taxi violence.

In February this year taxi violence erupted on Woodmead Drive in Sunninghill. During the incident three people were shot and a vehicle was set alight.
