Suspect dies behind bars

MIDRAND - A man arrested for fraud died on the evening of 8 July while being held in the Midrand Police Station cells.

Midrand police spokesperson and social crime prevention co-ordinator Constable Nanty Belebesi confirmed that the deceased was found by police in a cell where he was held with five other suspects.

Belebesi said the man who resided in Steyn Road, Midrand refused to accompany police to the station when two constables went to his house. “The deceased alleged that the matter in question was a civil matter and police must show him a warrant of arrest first,” she said.

Two more police officers arrived at the man’s residence and he agreed to go to the station. The man was detained at Midrand police cells and allegedly did not have any injuries at the time.

Exact details surrounding the deceased’s death are not yet known. Police are investigating the cause of death and will get a detailed report from an unnamed mortuary this week.

Belebesi said according to the other suspects who shared the cell with the deceased, the fraud suspect had slipped and struck his head. “Police came to the cell and found the suspect dead. His head was swollen,” she said.

Details: Midrand Police Station 011 347 1626.
