Youngsters doing it for themselves.

MIDRAND - Three youngsters with a love for fashion have come together to create the street wear brand, ProxyWear.

Paul Matt, the label’s founder and CEO, said they came together as three young people from the Ivory Park area, who are in their twenties and are fashion obsessed.

The trio launched their street wear on 16 June at an event held in Lord Khanyile Youth Centre in Ivory Park. “The range was about redefining June 16, by re-designing old school uniforms and giving them a modern and stylish look,” said Matt.

“We all contribute to the brand differently, Nthabiseng Makola handles the modelling side of things,” he said.

Makola is in charge of their Miss Angel Agency, a modelling agency that was established under the ProxyWear label. “It’s just that all of our interests just complemented each other,” said Makola. Thando Simelane, the third person of the group is in charge of entertainment. Their launch included local artists such as ‘Cheezy Da Rapper’ and ‘Offensive Soul’.

Simelane was also MC of the event.

Although they are currently funding their project themselves and largely operate from their Facebook page and other social media platforms, the trio would like to see their brand grow. “We’ve approached a numbers of funding agencies, however, we’ve realised that our proposal was not up to par,” said Matt, “hence why we’ve gone back to the drawing board and are working on our proposal again.”

Matt said the trio would not give up on their dream of becoming a successful brand stemming from Tembisa. “We are inspired by all local designers that have made it abroad; this gives us hope.”
